India is the best climate

The weather has a huge impact on the experience of a trip to India. An extreme amount of rain can fall during India's rainy season, also known as the monsoon. People who cannot tolerate extreme heat well should definitely not travel to India during certain months, as temperatures can then rise to over 40 degrees. Therefore, before booking any trip, you should think about what is the best time to travel to India for you. You must also apply for an India visa before you leave.

The seasons in India

India has a winter, a summer and a monsoon season. During the winter - the months of December to March - India is generally dry with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees. In the summer months of April and May the temperatures can be high, in northern India they can even rise to more than 40 ° C. The rainy season in northern India falls between June and October, in southern India most precipitation falls in June, October and November. During the rainy season, heavy and prolonged rains can occur, and some states can experience flooding as a result. The west coast and northeast of India are generally hardest hit by the monsoon rains.

The climate in India differs depending on the region

The Indian climate varies from region to region. The north of the country has a hot, semi-arid climate, i.e. a hot (semi) dry or steppe climate, while the south and west coasts have a tropical climate. For this reason, strong temperature fluctuations occur in the north of the country during the course of the year. In the capital New Delhi (which is located in northern India), the maximum temperature in December and January averages around 22 degrees Celsius, while in summer the daytime temperature is over 40 degrees Celsius. In southern India and the west coast, these fluctuations are less pronounced, and temperatures are high all year round, typically between 30 and 37 degrees during the day. The climate in the Himalaya region - in the areas of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir in the far north - differs from the rest of India. A lot of snow often falls here from November to June. The temperatures here are between -14 and 25 degrees Celsius over the course of the year.

Best travel time

Since India is a huge country with several climatic zones, no period can be given which is the best travel time for the whole country; this depends on the region you want to visit. For the north of the country, October to March are the best months to travel, because then it rains little and the temperatures are bearable to pleasant. If you want to travel in the south of India, then you should choose a time between December and February. For a stay on the west coast of India, for example in Mumbai or Goa, October to May are the best months, because then there is hardly any rain.

Not only the area you are visiting, but also what you want to do in India plays an important role in deciding on a particular time to visit. While traveling in the rainy season is generally not recommended, for nature lovers it can be an excellent idea to travel to India during the monsoons when the landscapes are at their most beautiful. Travelers traveling to India for Ayurveda treatment are also recommended to do so in the rainy season, as the air is then more humid and cooler, making it easier for the skin to absorb the herbal oils used. An additional advantage of traveling in the summer or rainy season is that there are fewer tourists than between November and March. The months July to October are best suited for mountain hikes or climbs.

Apply for India visa

A visa is required to travel to India and can be applied for online. The country currently (2020) offers three different electronic Visa India for tourists, with a validity of either one month, one year or even five years. It is generally not recommended to apply for a one-month India visa as this visa often causes problems. With the one-year visa, after the application has been approved, you are still free to decide when you want to enter India within the validity period of one year. This will allow you to easily postpone the trip if the weather conditions in the region you plan to visit are better in another month.

With the one-year tourist visa, you can travel to India several times within the validity period, as long as each individual stay does not last longer than 90 days. Therefore, you can travel to India multiple times with the same visa to visit a different region or to experience the same region again at a different time of the year.
