What are the benefits of resin floors

Epoxy resin coating for every surface

Epoxy resin coating

Almost any surface can be coated with epoxy resin and thus sealed completely waterproof. If metal is coated, corrosion protection also takes place. The coating can be done with clear epoxy as well as in a wide variety of colors and even with glitter.

Even wood that is slightly damaged by the weather or age can still be saved with an epoxy resin coating. Therefore, an epoxy resin coating is often used in boat building for the repair of historic wooden ships.

In the same way, the epoxy resin coating is now used to save old frameworks and exposed beams in the interior and exterior. A bar does not have to be completely replaced, but the rotting is stopped and the epoxy closes all pores of the wood lastingly.

Fiberglass fabric and epoxy resin

If cracks or holes are to be closed at the same time with an epoxy resin coating, glass fiber fabric is usually used. The coating remains flexible and elastic. With such a coating in connection with fiberglass fabric, even greater temperature fluctuations and movements of the surface can be compensated for.

The fiberglass fabric is embedded in the wet epoxy resin and coated again with epoxy resin. This process has to be carried out a few times with very thin layers of fiberglass.

The following can be coated, among other things:

  • stone
  • concrete
  • Styrofoam
  • Wood
  • Tiles
  • Swimming pools
  • Ponds
  • OSB panels
  • all metals
  • Roof tiles
  • Terrace slabs

Floor coating for hall and warehouse

Just a few millimeters of the epoxy resin coating are enough to seal the floor of a warehouse or industrial plant in a shock-proof and waterproof manner. This floor can even be driven on with a forklift truck without suffering any damage.

Processing is easy, but it takes some time because the product has to cure for a long time before it is fully resilient. After that, however, the floor is almost indestructible and easy to clean for decades.

Epoxy resin coating can have disadvantages

At this point, a disadvantage of the epoxy resin comes into play. It's just hard to remove. Once the epoxy resin floor coating has cured, it can only be sanded off mechanically.

If an existing factory hall or the like is to be equipped with the floor coating, it must be completely emptied. Then extensive preparatory work and usually a few sanding steps are necessary. A primer is usually applied and it must dry before the final coating hits the floor.

In addition, there is the hardening time, during which the machines or goods cannot be moved back into the hall. The hall will not be usable for at least a week. This loss of use must be added to the costs for the epoxy resin coating.

Advantages of an epoxy resin coating on the floor

  • chemically resistant
  • abrasion resistant
  • dust-free and tack-free
  • completely liquid-tight
  • decontaminable
  • wear-free

Coating exposed concrete

Fair-faced concrete is becoming increasingly popular and is now used by many builders. To prevent concrete from becoming stained or sanded over time, however, it must be coated with epoxy resin. A clear epoxy is usually used for this.

However, extensive preparatory work must be carried out. The concrete must be smooth and clean before the epoxy coating can be applied. A particularly varied note is achieved if special formwork panels with a deep wood grain are used when shuttering the walls. This grain is then later shown in relief on the coated walls.

Garage and basement

In the private sector, the epoxy resin coating is also used more and more often for the floor in the basement or in a garage. The seal is easy to clean and completely waterproof. Since the epoxy resin coating is only a few millimeters thick, no structural changes are necessary and there is no loss of room height.

Advantages of epoxy resin coatings

  • easy to apply
  • impact resistant after hardening
  • waterproof
  • robust and durable
  • easy to clean

Stone carpet

When processing stone carpets, an epoxy resin coating is often used. This always happens when the stone carpet is particularly colored or has a complicated pattern.

Since the stone carpet is already made with epoxy resin as an adhesive and binding agent, a coating with the robust resin fits in perfectly. However, care should be taken to use a special UV-resistant product, otherwise the resin can yellow over time.

Swimming pools can also be re-sealed with an epoxy resin coating. Especially if you have an older tiled swimming pool in the basement, this type of coating can be the rescue.

If a plastic pool is to be re-sealed with an epoxy resin coating, it is important to first coat a sample area on the upper edge. So you can see how the affected plastic reacts to the epoxy. In the vast majority of cases, however, even a cheap liner pool can be repaired in this way.
