Multicultural Democracies in Comparison

Multiculturalism has become part of everyday experience in many western and non-western societies. The urgent question therefore arises as to how the connection between democracy and multiculturalism must be conceived today and what new challenges must be met by the democratic institutions. How much plurality and difference is possible in a democracy? The articles in this book revolve around this core question. On the one hand, the theoretical prerequisites of the traditional political science concept of institutions and democracy are questioned and confronted with the fact of multiculturalism. On the other hand, both established Western democracies and societies in transition are empirically analyzed to determine how they institutionally cope with ethnic and cultural differences within their borders.
