How does our environment affect our studies?
Study environment and sustainability
Are you interested in topics related to the environment and sustainability? Then turn your hobby into a job, because you can study environment and sustainability at many universities. We'll show you the possibilities.
Although they are not among the best-known courses, they are no less important because of that: courses relating to the environment and sustainability. While other subjects focus primarily on entrepreneurial and economic content or impart knowledge almost exclusively in the sense of industry, this is about decisions in favor of flora and fauna, about avoiding pollution and rubbish or about the economical and effective use of natural resources. If you also want to do something for our future and have a big heart for people, animals and plants, then you should think about studying the environment and sustainability. We will introduce you to various options.
Technical courses in all aspects of the environment and sustainability
Those who want to deal with the environment and sustainability will find many technical courses in particular. After all, many environmental issues have to do with technical or technological processes. In the field of environmental technology, for example, you develop strategies with which the soil and water can be protected. This includes the topic of ecological waste disposal. The use of sustainable energies is also part of your area of expertise. Regardless of whether it is the sun, geothermal energy or biofuel - you ensure that there is no or at least significantly less pollution on earth in the future. So that you can develop, build or analyze plants and systems, you will deal with subjects such as physics, electrical engineering, mechanics, material systems and process engineering in the course of your studies. In the Renewable Energies / Energy Technology course, you focus on alternative energy sources from the start. You will learn a lot about mechanical engineering and renewable energies, at the end of your studies you can choose a specialization such as energy storage or electrical networks. You think much more entrepreneurially when it comes to biotechnology. Here you will learn how to apply biological principles in medicine, agriculture or industry. Genetic engineering, drug development, and nutritional supplements are just a few examples. But you will also find answers to the question of how you can use biotechnology to relieve existing resources and the environment.
Working close to people, animals and plants
If you are less interested in technology, but have a knack for dealing with people, plants or animals, you will find suitable courses at many universities. How about a job, for example, in which you take on tasks very close to animals? In the subject of animal management, for example, you can scientifically deal with pets, wild animals or farm animals. Or you focus on the economic component and learn everything about animal husbandry, animal care and animal breeding. The direct contact with animals is also part of the animal care / animal welfare study: This is about species-appropriate wild and breeding animal husbandry but also about veterinary and economic knowledge. On the other hand, you focus on people with courses that focus on development aid or development cooperation. You will improve your foreign language skills and learn many regional and development policy basics so that you can later work as a development worker for organizations and associations. Either you take on administrative tasks from Germany or you are active on site in less developed countries and regions and can do people and nature good. Forestry is primarily about the forest and its commercial use, but you are also responsible for ensuring that it can be used as a natural and recreational area and that it is preserved for local animal species. And also in the field of agriculture / agricultural sciences, skilled workers are needed who are familiar with organic plant cultivation and animal welfare and who know how artificial fertilizers can be used in an environmentally friendly way.
Degree programs with specialization options in the direction of environment and sustainability
There are subjects that initially impart broad basic knowledge and cover a wide range of specialist content. As a rule, you can specialize in a very specific area in such courses at the latest from the fifth semester. If you decide to study environmental protection, you will first deal a lot with mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics. Engineering and law courses are also common. Depending on the university, you can later concentrate on areas such as waste technology, ecological environmental protection or microbiology. Even more basic knowledge awaits you in the subject of biology. The first thing here is that you deal with the structure and appearance of organisms. You examine people, animals and plants. The smallest molecules play just as much a role in the course as complex ecosystems. If you find a sub-area of biology particularly exciting, you can usually specialize in it during the course of your studies. Depending on the university, focus areas such as nature conservation biology, plant ecology or animal physiology are offered.
Plan and coordinate environmental activities
There are a number of companies, authorities and organizations that plan and coordinate environmental activities. If you want to work there as an environmental manager, for example, you have to enroll in the environmental management subject of the same name. In addition to technical and scientific basics, it is primarily about energy and environmental policy, but also about economic thinking. Which environmental protection laws have to be complied with? How can production processes be designed to be as resource-efficient as possible? And how can you save costs? You will deal with these and similar questions during the course of your studies. The subject of environmental science is related in terms of content: As a graduate, you are fit in scientific, legal and economic matters and therefore ideally suited for the conception, planning and implementation of environmentally relevant projects.
