Sperm quantity and quality of a mouflon ram (Ovis ammon musimon, Pallas 1811) in the course of the year

Summary

From a mouflon ram, four years old at the start of the study, 101 sperm samples were analyzed over the course of one year. In addition to the assessment of the general condition, the evaluation of the sexual organs and the mating behavior, the ejaculate volume, color and consistency of the sperm samples were recorded.

Furthermore, sperm motility, sperm concentration and the proportion of abnormal sperm cells were examined. In addition, the unspecific germ content and the hydrogen ion concentration of the sperm samples were determined. The collection took place in an artificial vagina. When collecting sperm, the ram showed an undisturbed mating behavior.

The results allow the conclusion that the mouflon ram examined is subject to a physiological resting phase after the rut from the beginning of February to the end of April. The values recorded during this time do not rule out the ram's ability to fertilize, although no pregnant ewes are available as evidence of this.

Summary

Over a period of one year 101 sperm samples from a four year old mouflon ram were analyzed. Along with an estimation of the general health of the animal, an evaluation of the genital organs and rutting behavior; the ejaculation volume, color, and consistency of the semen samples were determined. Sperm motility, concentration, and per cent abnormal sperm cells were also analyzed. The nonspecific germ content and the hydrogen ion concentration of the semen samples were determined. The samples were obtained using an artificial vagina. The ram showed normal rutting behavior under these conditions. The results show that the mouflon ram has a physiological resting stage between the beginning of February and the end of April. The data evaluated from the sample obtained during this period cannot negate the fertility of the ram even though no pregnant ewes can be presented as evidence.
