CO2 pricing will make the gas price more expensive in 2021

For the 2021 accounting year, many homeowners will have to pay more for gas. Because in addition to persistently low temperatures, there has also been the so-called since January CO2 tax. The federal government has this as part of the Climate package introduced to account for the cost of harmful climate impacts in the price of gas. The fee depends on the CO2 emissions and is 25 euros per tonne of CO2 in 2021. It will rise to 55 euros by 2025, before the federal government will set a price corridor of 55 to 65 euros for 2026. This alone will increase the gas price by 0.5 to 1.2 cents per kilowatt hour in 2026.

The additional costs for homeowners with an annual energy consumption of around 20,000 kilowatt hours amount to 100 to 240 euros per year.

Higher network charges lead to rising gas prices

The network charges will also drive up prices in 2021. Because the fees that gas network operators charge for maintenance and expansion work on the gas network rose by an average of 1.7 percent. For households with a consumption of 20,000 kilowatt hours of gas per year, this means additional costs of around 20 euros for the next billing.

Wholesale prices are stagnating at a high level

While falling wholesale prices caused the gas market to ease up until mid-2020, the course reversed at the end of the year. Prices rose by over 50 percent and settled at a high level in spring 2021. If the demand values rise again at the end of the pandemic, the gas price is likely to continue to rise, especially in the second half of the year.

Experience has shown that end customers feel these changes with a time lag. While smaller providers react quickly to fluctuations on the stock exchange, basic providers tend to adjust their prices more slowly.
