In the first part, Eddie Murphy played Prince Akeem, who travels to the New York borough of Queens to find a suitable queen. Meanwhile, Akeem is no longer a prince, but King of Zamunda. When he learns that he has a son in America, he embarks on a great journey again, following a single mission: He wants Lavelle to be crowned prince in Zamunda and thus fulfill his dying father's last wish.

In addition to Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall as his best friend Semmi, James Earl Jones also return to their roles as King Jaffe Joffer, Shari Headley and John Amos. New on board are Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and Louie Anderson. Craig Brewer, who already made the Netflix film "Dolemite Is My Name" with Murphy, has taken the director's chair.
