Urine color: the scale
The urine should not go blindly into the toilet, every now and then it is worth taking a look in the bowl. Because urine tells us a lot about our health.
The color of the urine indicates whether you are drinking enough or whether you have a disease.
First of all, an all-clear: As with bowel movements, the color of the urine can be influenced by certain foods - including the smell: everyone knows this during the asparagus season. However, beetroot can also discolour the urine reddish without the presence of an illness.
The color of the urine should be between light yellow and amber, and small fluctuations are not a cause for concern. However, if a change persists or concerns you, it is essential to clarify this with a doctor.
For medical professionals, urine color is an important diagnostic tool that can indicate certain diseases.
What is urine
Urine consists of 95 percent water, the rest are acids, salts, urea and degradation products. The kidneys filter the blood and in the process harmful substances are excreted - these then leave our body in the urine.
How much is normal
People should shed at least 500 milliliters / day. If more than 2.5 liters of urine is produced per day, this is known as polyuria. 400 to 500 milliliters per day is called oliguria, and less than 100 milliliters per day is anuria.
How much urine ends up in the bladder also depends on how much is drunk. And that drinking enough is very important, Dr. Jens Aberle, specialist in internal medicine. He immediately gives tips on how to start drinking more:
"The feeling of thirst decreases with age. Nevertheless, you should try to take in one to two liters of fluid a day. You can get used to it quickly.
The expert also reveals which drinks are useful here:
"Useful drinks are water or fruit juices that are not too high in calories. Drinks such as cola, which contain a lot of sugar, should be avoided if possible. [...] Although coffee has a diuretic effect, a cup of coffee has a positive effect on you Fluid balance off. A very healthy drink is green tea. "
How does urine turn yellow?
The urine is colored yellow by so-called urochromes such as the bilirubin degradation products Sterkobilin and Urobilinden. This bile pigment is produced when the blood pigment or hemoglobin is broken down.
The concentration of urochromes in the urine influences the color intensity. You can also do the rapid test at home with special test strips: You can make a primary diagnosis of the status of the carbohydrate metabolism, kidney and liver function, the acid-base balance and the possible presence of bacteriuria. The urine strips are by no means a substitute for a visit to the doctor!
So what does the urine color reveal?
Any unusual color in the urine should definitely be investigated - if the change persists and worries you should clarify this with a doctor.
Most of the time, the color of the urine has a harmless cause, due to insufficient fluid or certain foods.
The extent to which the urine is colored yellow depends on urochromes: an increased concentration leads to yellow urine (hypertonic), a higher concentration, e.g. after dehydration, to a yellow-orange color. A low concentration (hypotonic), on the other hand, makes the urine appear light yellow to colorless.
This scale explains in detail what the urine color says:
The urine is very dilute: You have drunk a lot, possibly even too much. If you constantly feel very thirsty, you should get checked for diabetes.
Light yellow / yellow
Great. This color of urine is normal: you drink enough.
Dark yellow / amber colors
If the urine is dark yellow or even amber, you have probably not drunk enough. Therefore, the urine is usually a little darker in the morning, as no one has drunk at night. So grab a glass of water right away!
Beer colors / syrup
If your urine is so discolored, it is already dehydrated and you should drink something urgently. This color can also indicate a liver disease, so the following also applies here: If the discoloration lasts longer, ask your doctor.
Here, too, there is a lack of fluids that should be remedied immediately. If the discoloration persists for a long time, you should clarify this with a doctor, as the cause here may be a biliary or liver disease.
Dark orange or brown colored urine can also indicate bilirubinuria and thus jaundice (jaundice) or Meulengracht's disease. Here, too, a visit to the doctor should be a must!
Brown urine can also be the first symptom of kidney or bladder cancer: off to the doctor!
Pink / red
Even if this color can cause a shock in the toilet: A pink discoloration is not necessarily dangerous, but can also be caused by foods with a lot of carotene or betanine, such as beetroot, rhubarb or blueberries.
If you have not eaten such foods, you should also seek advice from a doctor about this urine color, as this can be an indication of various diseases: Blood in the urine can indicate infections, kidney diseases, prostate problems or poisoning.
This urine color is very rare and can be the result of a genetic disorder. A bacterial infection can also be the cause. If the discoloration persists, see a doctor! Blue-green urine can also be caused by certain foods or drugs.
Foamy and cloudy
If the urine bubbles out foaming, this can be an indication of kidney problems or a poor diet. A bladder infection can also be the cause: the urine is clouded by cervical mucus, proteins and blood cells. If you are unsure, it is better to see your doctor.
Black and dark
If the urine turns black, it probably contains melanogen, which oxidizes to melanin in the air. This condition is known as melanuria and can occur in the presence of melanoma. Alkaptonuria can also turn the urine black or dark. In this case, homogentisate is excreted in the urine due to a defect or lack of the enzyme homogentisate dioxygenase. It is essential to clarify with a doctor!
