Summary

Some of the foreign studies (discussed in Chapter 2) attempt to assess the technology at the beginning of the 21st century by the expected market potential. This links a rough forecast of technological development with an even rougher and uncertain market potential assessment, which ultimately leaves more questions unanswered than answered. The synergetic character of the technology at the beginning of the 21st century (see Section 4.1) actually does not allow an exact calculation and allocation of the individual technological developments with product and market potentials. If a new product is widely used due to improved materials, can the new market segment be assigned to the materials sector or - if it is an artificial organ - to biotechnology or medicine? Microsystems technology, which integrates various other micro technologies, can hardly have any product-related market potential in this sense. In addition, market potentials only show the economic dimension, while at the present time technical contributions to other than economic problem areas are also awaited. For these reasons, a different evaluation method is chosen in the present study.
