Disabling Internet Explorer on Windows

Use one of the following methods to turn off Internet Explorer.

Note

If you want to restore the program to the same computer, it is recommended that you use the same method that you used first (Control Panel or DISM). Because Internet Explorer is still installed on your computer after it is disabled, you should continue to install security updates that apply to Internet Explorer.

Method 1 - Use Control Panel (Client Systems Only)

On client systems, you can Program and features element Use it in Control Panel to disable Internet Explorer. To do this, proceed as follows:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the box Run to to open.
  2. Give appwiz.cpl and then select OK off.
  3. Choose in the element Programs and Features the option Switch window features on or off.
  4. Look for it Windows in Features dialog box after the entry for the installed version of Internet Explorer. For example, find the Internet Explorer 11 entry. Then check the box.
  5. Choose You ok to commit the change.
  6. Restart the computer.

Method 2: using DISM (client and server systems)

On client and server systems, you can use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command line tool to disable Internet Explorer. For example, follow these steps to turn off Internet Explorer 11.

  • Deactivate the feature

    To disable Internet Explorer 11, run the following command from an elevated command prompt:.
