Color-blind people dream in color
Dream Colorblind People In Color & quest;
Although researchers previously believed that dreams were just black and white, they now know that most dreams are colorful. But what do the dreams of color blind people look like?
That depends on when they became color blind. Because people dream of what they know, people who become color blind after birth "see" colors in their dreams, according to "Color Blindness: Causes and Effects" (Dalton Publishing, 2002).
However, people who are born completely color blind and only see their surroundings in black, white and shades of gray, do not know what colors look like and therefore their minds have no memories to make from the colorful dreams.
Complete color blindness, a visual condition also known as total color vision deficiency (CVD) or achromatopsia, is extremely rare and affects only an estimated 1 in 30,000 people worldwide, according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
Red-green color vision disorders (in which a person has difficulty distinguishing between red and green) are much more common and account for about 99 percent of color vision defieiencies, according to "Color Blindness: Causes and Effects." In population groups with northern European sex, red-green color visual disturbances occur in about 8 percent of men and 0.5 percent of women, according to the NLM.
A person with a red-green color vision defective will dream of the same color that they see when awake. For example, in the American flag, in his or her dreams, moss green stripes instead of scarlet.
Dream in the 1950s that researchers widely believed that people only dreamed of being in black and white, although both earlier and later dream research studies found that dreams were color, according to a 2002 study by Eric Schwitzgebel, a philosophy professor at the University of California at Riverside.
The growing popularity of black and white movies in the 1950s as well as increased affordability of black and white televisions may have played a role in the phenomenon of people with full sight color blind dreams.
"The first half of the 20th century saw the rise of the black and white film media, and it is likely that this change in film technology was the origin of the view that dreams are black and white," Schwitzgebel explained in his study, published in the journal Study of the History and Philosophy of Science.
In the 1960s, as media began to shift to color printing, reports of black and white dreams became increasingly rare, showing that the things people observe during the daytime leach into their dream world.
"Very, very rarely does anyone report a dream that is black and white like an old movie," said Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, an expert on dreaming ... "If they are not color blind, it may be due exposure to old movies. "
Barrett notes that if you stopped dreaming the colors last night that doesn't necessarily mean that you dreamed about black and white. Some people can focus on the colors in a dream, while others don't notice what color things were. This selective perception type is similar to how other people perceive the real world, Barrett said.
"When I asked you guys to describe something that happened two days ago, you didn't include any color in the incident - or maybe you did," Barrett said of the little secrets of life. "If someone asked me what color I was wearing, you might be able to tell me or Notcolor just not always a standout part of the events. The events are more about the interpersonal aspect, like navigating or trying to get somewhere while at other times maybe color is important in what we do and notice. "
