The topic is used in many languages, including German Syllable or word separation capitalized in the classroom. Compound words are used in their Components (Syllables) broken down.

There are several reasons for separating words. On the one hand, you can separate a word at the end of a line and thus a aesthetic typeface create, on the other hand, word separations are used to clarify which ones single syllables a word consists and where this is separable.

1. From syllable swing to syllable star (1st - 2nd class)

With the worksheets of the Auer Verlag your students familiarize themselves with the German spelling in the form of a Station training

The individual stations deal with topics such as spelling phenomena, capitalization, hyphenation or basic vocabulary.

The worksheets around the Hyphenation have the following stations:

  1. Syllables hop: the word in the picture is pronounced aloud and the pupils jump up with each syllable.
  2. Syllables go: the word in the picture is pronounced aloud and you take a step with each syllable.
  3. Syllables swing and crouch: every word is pronounced aloud and the pupils swing their arms to the left and right with every syllable.
  4. Trace syllables: the children trace the syllables in blue and red and change color after each syllable.
  5. Syllable arcs: at this station you work in groups of two and draw arcs of syllables under each syllable.
  6. A vowel in each syllable: all vowels in the word are marked in blue and syllable arcs are drawn under each syllable.
  7. Put syllables together to form words: the pupils read a text and fill in the missing words.
  8. Syllable star: Parts of the syllable star are cut apart, mixed and reassembled correctly. Then the words are written into the exercise book with arcs of syllables.

3. Syllable boats ahoy! (1st - 6th grade)

Your students practice with these teaching materials from Persen Publishing House the Word breakdown as well as the sound-letter assignment.

We have briefly summarized everything you need to carry out the task for you:

  • Captain cards (on these are vowels and the diphthongs “au”, “eu”, “ei”)
  • Syllable boats (syllable arcs) made of cardboard (five per child)
  • Template for the syllable boats
  • Face cards

And this is how it is played:

  1. Every student gets five syllable boats and puts your own name with the syllable boats, always in the direction of writing. He or she then paces the syllable boats and speaks every syllable of the name out loud. TIP: This step can be repeated again, this time with the name of a classmate.
  2. Every child draws one Picture card and create the number that matches the picture Syllable boats
  3. The pupils receive one sentence Captain cards. As a preliminary exercise, they first name individual syllables, then the appropriate captain card is selected and placed in a syllable boat. Each child then draws one new picture card, speaks the word clearly in syllables, puts the correct number of syllable boats on the table and puts the appropriate captain card in each boat.

4. How often do you have to clap? (12th class)

5th hyphenation at the end of the line (6th grade)

Especially with the Hyphenation at the end of the line specific rules must be observed.
