History [edit | Edit source]

The X Factor (2010-2011) Edit source]

Originally, each member sang as a solo artist in the season seven auditions of The X Factor. (It was the second time for Liam, having dropped out of the casting show two years earlier.) All five made it from the casting to boot camp, but dropped out before going to the jury house. However, some of the judges found that some of the contestants who failed were too talented to just let them go. Nine of the eliminated candidates were recalled. The five boys were Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis. The five boys and another four girls were given a second chance. If they agreed to this second chance, they would each be formed into a boy band and a girl group. Both groups agreed and were still able to move into the jury house afterwards. They are now on a break since 2015.

After bootcamping, the five boys spent two weeks at Harry's home in Cheshire to get to know each other better. When they were looking for a band name together, Harry thought of the name One Direction.

As a band they made it to the finals, but only finished third. Rebecca Ferguson made it into second place and Matt Cardle won.
