Elton John biography

Sir Elton Hercules John was born on March 25, 1947 under the real name Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Great Britain. Even in his early childhood, Elton John showed a keen interest and talent for music. He started playing the piano at the age of three and was accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London at the age of eleven. Although his parents were very musical themselves and also played instruments, Elton John was only able to really live out his talent after his parents separated, as his father was rather reserved about his son's ambitions.

At fifteen, a year after his parents' divorce, Elton John began his professional music career as a pianist in a local pub. In the mid-sixties Elton John spent his time primarily with his first own band "Bluesology", with which he was able to gain some tour experience as a supporting act and with solo appearances in a London hotel bar The composer was hired where he was to work with Bernie Taupin for the first time. Elton John and Bernie Taupin's professional partnership continues to this day and has shaped some of Elton John's most successful albums.

So far Elton John and Bernie Taupin had only written music for other musicians, but soon began to record their own pieces at the insistence of their record company. In 1968 they released their first single "I've Been Loving You" and a year later the album "Empty Sky". Although the record was not a commercial success, it was nonetheless received positively by critics. The following albums often made it into the charts, but the album "Honkey Chateau" was the first album that really reached the top position of the American album charts and finally helped Elton John achieve his breakthrough. The following albums also climbed consistently at the top of the charts in the USA, but it was only with the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" that he managed to spread his popularity across the Atlantic in his home country.

On the rise of his success Elton John founded his own record label "Rocket Records" in 1974 and in the same year he collaborated with John Lennon and released his next album "Caribou", which promptly reached the top of the charts. In the following years he was able to continue his streak of success and composed a whole series of number one hits. Many of his most famous albums such as "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" date from this time.

In 1984 Elton John married his former sound engineer Renate Blauel, from whom he divorced three years later. Two years after his wedding, he also had to undergo an operation on his vocal cords that would permanently change his voice.

In the early 1990s, the single "Sacrifice" made it into the UK charts as number one. His next big hit came in 1994 when he recorded the soundtrack for the Disney movie "The Lion King" with Tim Rice. In addition to immense commercial success, the album brought Elton John an Oscar and a Grammy Award and reached diamond status by 1999 with over 15 million units sold. His next big success was overshadowed by the tragic accident of Princess Diana in the summer of 1997. The single "Candle in the Wind", which he set to music in memory of Lady Diana, is still the best-selling single of all time with more than 33 million units sold . At the end of the nineties he also ventured to Broadway with the musical adaptation of "The Lion King" and the musical "Aida".

After the turn of the century, Elton John continued his career on Broadway and composed the music for the musicals "Billie Elliot the Musical" and "Lestat: The Musical". He entered into a civil partnership with longtime partner David Furnish in 2005, the same year same-sex civil partnerships were legalized in the UK. Her son "Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John" was born in 2010 with the support of a surrogate mother. In addition to his music career, Elton John is also involved in charitable causes, particularly through the "Elton John AIDS Foundation", which he founded in 1992.

In the course of his successful career, Elton John has garnered a number of awards. He received his star on the Hollywod Walk of Fame in 1975. In 1994 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and one year later he was named "Commander of The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire". The accolade by Queen Elizabeth II, which allowed him to bear the title "Sir", was to follow three years later. In addition to an Oscar, Elton John also earned six Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and a Tony Award.
