What foods cause high urine pH
11 foods that make your body acidic
Too much acid-forming foods over-acidify our body in the long run. This is accompanied by symptoms such as brittle bones, mineral deficiencies or fatigue. We show you which 11 foods cause acidosis.
What is the acid-base balance?
The acid-base balance of the body is regulated with the help of our organs - lung, liver and Kidneys - regulated. If he is unbalanced due to poor nutrition or chronic illnesses, the pH value in the blood drops, and we get too acidic. In the usual guidebooks and diet books on the acid-base balance you can find very different information about the effect of certain foods on the Acid-base balance. Unfortunately, many authors do not cite any sources or scientific evidence. We will show you which scientific criteria can be used to ban acid-forming foods from your menu.
PRAL value: This is how acidic foods appear in the body
A scientifically proven source for estimating the acidity of foods is potential acidic load on the kidneys after Remer and Manz, too PRAL value called (eng .: "Potential Renal Acid Load"). For every 100 grams of a food, this value indicates how acidic or basic it is in the body. PRAL values are in the unit Milliequivalent acid per 100 g food (mEq / 100 g) specified.
The PRAL values are based on various factors that influence the pH value, e.g. the sulfur content of the Proteins, Phosphorus content, Minerals as well as the speed of the Absorption, i.e. processing and absorption in the intestine. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the amount of acid that the Kidneys must be eliminated. The excretion uses basic minerals to buffer the acids. Foods with a particularly high PRAL value have a strong acidifying effect on our body and thus promote acidification.
The myth of coffee: acidifying, or not?
Coffee is clearly an acid generator, but is that even true? Not necessarily: From a systemic point of view, coffee works with you PRAL value of -1.4 even easybasic on our body. It is therefore unlikely that coffee will cause our organism to become too acidic. However, this systemic effect must be distinguished from the local effect of coffee in the stomach. This is where coffee boosts the production of hydrochloric acid or Stomach acid causing excessive consumption especially in susceptible individuals to what is known as reflux heartburn can lead.
The effect of coffee on gastric acid production depends, among other things, on the roasting and is additionally fueled by other luxury items such as cigarettes and alcohol. So try different types of coffee and roasts, enjoy them in moderation (two to three cups per day), drink a glass of water and avoid consuming other luxury foods at the same time in order to go easy on your stomach.
11 foods that make your body acidic
Cow's milk is neither alkaline nor acidic in the human body. In the case of the processed dairy product cheese, things look very different: the front runners are Parmesan, Processed cheese and Gouda cheese With PRAL values between 20 and 30Milliequivalent acid per 100 grams Food (mEq / 100 g). Cottage cheese is somewhat less acidic and has a PRAL value of 8 mEq / 100g. If you are suffering from acidosis, it is a wise decision to go without cheese, at least temporarily, as difficult as that may be.

2. Meat and sausage products
A healthy diet includes good ones Sources of protein to. The problem with meat and sausage products, however, is that while they are high in protein, they also contain large amounts of it phosphorus. This results in PRAL values of approx. 10 mEq / 100g. Beef, pork and poultry do not differ much from one another. If you are too acidic, you should therefore absolutely vegetable sources of protein because they usually contain less phosphorus and more basic minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. Good candidates here are like legumes soy, lenses or Peas. Have a particularly basic effect Kidney and green beans.

3. Chicken egg
With a PRAL value of 1 mEq / 100g, egg white is only slightly acidic. The problem is that egg yolkwhich with 24 mEq / 100g has a strong acidifying effect. This is in high phosphorus content of the yolk justified.

Some grain products are acidic foods. For example, they have a particularly acidic effectoatmeal. Your PRAL value is included 10 mEq / 100g. However, if you are not at risk of over-acidification, you can continue to eat oatmeal, as it is extremely rich in protein and fiber.
5. Fish and seafood
Similar to meat and sausage products, fish and seafood also contribute to acidification. Due to high protein and phosphorus content Most types of fish have PRAL values of up to 10 mEq / 100g. seafood even beat for the most part up to 20 mEq / 100g to book. Fish is therefore only recommended in moderation. However, you should keep your hands off crabs, mussels or prawns if you want to maintain an acid-base balance.

Peanuts have a PRAL value of 6,2mEq / 100gsurprisingly acidic. With further Legumes you have to look carefully: lenses and Peas are whole slightly acidic, greenBeans and Kidney beans however work slightly basic. In general, however, legumes are one of the healthiest foods because they provide a lot of protein, fiber and phytochemicals. The only thing you should avoid is peanuts if you are too acidic.

7. Greek yogurt
A distinction must also be made with yoghurt. Natural yoghurt made from whole milk with the usual fat content between 1.5% and 3.5% only has a very slightly acidic effect with PRAL values of approx. 1 mEq / 100g.It looks different at Greek yogurt from: Due to the higher protein and fat content, it has a PRAL value of 5,2mEq / 100g. It is not unhealthy because of this, but should only be consumed in moderation - especially if you are over-acidic.
Similar to oatmeal, unpeeled rice moves around a PRAL value of 12.5 mEq / 100g.It looks better with peeled rice because the shell contains phosphorus. Cooked, peeled rice only has a PRAL value of less than 5 mEq / 100g and is therefore significantly more tolerable.
bitter chocolate It is one of the healthier sweets when consumed in moderation, but because of what it contains Cocoa unfortunately it is also a Acid generator. However, the acidic effect persists with a PRAL value of 2 to 3 mEq / 100g still within limits. Of Milk chocolate however, you should keep your distance not only because of the acid-forming effect, but also because of the sugar.
Most breads move in an area around and less than 5 mEq / 100g and are therefore only slightly acid-forming. With over-acidity or the risk of over-acidification is loaf therefore moderately okay.
You have to look carefully at the nuts. While Walnuts, pistachios and almonds with PRAL values between 4 and 8 slightly sour act, move Hazelnuts in the slightly basic range (-2,8mEq / 100g). So there is no real risk of over-acidification as a result of increased nut consumption. In addition, walnuts in particular, with their essential omega-3 fatty acids, have a very high health value and should not be missing in any diet. If you are very sensitive to acid-forming foods, it is best to use hazelnuts.
Basic minerals against acidity
If you are acutely plagued by acidity, you can quickly remedy the situation with basic minerals, e.g. from Dr. Jacob's, Doppelherz or Vitamaze. Also, make sure you have a healthy, alkaline diet in the long term.
