WoW Classic Release: What You Need to Know to Get Started

The starting shot for WoW Classic will be given in Germany at 12:01 am on Tuesday, August 26th, 2019. From then on, gamers can experience the MMORPG classic World of Warcraft again as it was released 15 years ago. Our tips for Vanilla WoW answer the most important questions for beginners and newcomers.

Update (08/28/2019): Blizzard has responded to the rush and the queues and added two new German servers. Our article has been updated accordingly.

WoW Classic: What are the costs?

A normal World of Warcraft subscription is required to play WoW Classic. The price for this is 10.99-12.99 euros per month, depending on the term. Alternatively, it is also possible to play free-to-play via WoW brands. Read our detailed guide to WoW Classic: These are the costs - with and without a subscription.

WoW Classic: What are the system requirements?

WoW Classic is not as frugal as it was 15 years ago, but only requires the normal minimum requirements of World of Warcraft.

  • PC: Win 7, Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or AMD Phenom 8750, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB or AMD Radeon HD 4850 512 MB or Intel HD Graphics 4000, 2 GB RAM, 5 GB free hard disk space

WoW Classic: How do download & installation work?

To install WoW Classic, you need the Blizzard Battle.net desktop app. Switch to the World of Warcraft tab there. You can then use the menu if you have an active World of Warcraft subscriptionversion on World of Warcraft Classic and start the automatic download and installation process via "Install".

WoW Classic: Which German servers are there?

After logging in, you have to decide on a region and then a realm - as the servers are called. A distinction is made between PvE (player vs. enemy) and PvP (player vs. player). PvP means that players from different factions can attack each other anywhere. After player protests there are now four German-speaking servers (the last ones added are bold):

  • PvE realms: Everlook, Razorfen, Lakeshire
  • PvP realms: Lucifron, Venoxis, Patchwerk, Dragon's Call, Transcendence

A player can create up to 10 characters on each realm, but only for one faction on PvP realms. In total, a maximum of 50 characters are possible per player in WoW Classic.

WoW Classic: What to do with queues?

Blizzard expects the servers to be overloaded at the time of release - despite the stress test in the beta. The first Everlook and Razorfen servers are likely to be particularly hard hit. A tip from the developers is therefore to switch to the new realms Razorfen and Venoxis. International servers are another alternative.

WoW Classic: What is Layering?

In order not to overload the starting areas with the rush of players, Blizzard has come up with what is known as layering. This means that, depending on the number of players, several instances of a game region run simultaneously on one server. In order to be able to play together with other friends, it is sufficient to switch to a common group or guild in the game.
